On 13 April 1960 Britannia 102s took over from Canadair Argonauts on a 13 hours 25 minutes service to Abadan via Beirut and Damascus, and on 25-26 September srs 312 GAOVN carried HRH Princess Alexandra to Lagos for the Nigerian independence celebrations. Then, on 2May 1952, BOAC inaugurated the world's first scheduled passenger service by ajet airliner when Comet 1G-ALYP left London for Johannesburg. The Comets slashed flying times on BOAC's routes to Africa and the Far East, and established the airline as the world leader. Sadly though, a number of Comet 1 crashes led to the grounding of the type and the airline had to struggle on with piston-engined types once more. The Britannia and the re-designed Comet 4were to spearhead BOAC's re-equipment with modern British types, but delays with delivery of the Britannia fleet led to BOAC buying a small fleet of Douglas DC-7Cs to retain its competitive position on the Atlantic in the interim.
