Example text

As the post-earthquake confusion dissipated, some of those refugees eventually went back to their native quarters, while others decided to stay in the newer neighborhoods. In addition, as the city bounced back from the destruction of the earthquake rather quickly, more new arrivals flooded in from rural areas in search of a better life. The constant influx and relocation of people further weakened such idealized images as the edokko (literally: child of Edo) and the closely knit traditional shitamachi (downtown) neighborhood.

8 The Edo gaze is projected inward: the gazer expects the object to possess interior mechanisms that are not accessible by superficial observation. On the other hand, while the gaze in tailing assumes the same sort of interiority in an object, it assumes that it is possible to know the truth about such interior worlds through their exterior manifestations. Unlike the investigative gaze among Dutch learners during the Edo period that seek access to the object’s inner, hidden truth by gaining physical access to interior, the modan gaze believes that all manifestations of inner truth can be found on the surface.

Maybe I am mad. Maybe I am not completely mad, but may be a sort of psychotic. 26 Gōda Saburō, the protagonist from another of Ranpo’s works from the same year, “Yaneura no sanposha” (A Wanderer in the Attic; 1925) is also an avatar of the same urban youth who have more time and money than they can handle. Although his boredom ultimately leads him to murder one of his neighbors, he initially tries to dispel the intense feeling of ennui by other, more harmless means. He experiments with everything listed in the Encyclopedia of Entertainments (Goraku hyakka zenshū), including dressing as a woman and seducing men, but still feels an emotional void in his heart.
